Long before dogs were domesticated they used to live in packs. In every pack is an alpha dog or alpha female that assumes command of the other dogs. He/she rules with an iron paw and gets preferential benefits when it comes to feeding and mating with the females. The alpha male behavior still exists in dogs even after they have been domesticated. On the surface, it might sound interesting that your dog is dominant, but it isn’t practically. If you allow your dog to share your bed and have other privileges that member of your family have, the dog might see your family as a pack and want to dominate it. If this is happening to you and you’re looking for a way of dealing with alpha male behavior, then alpha male dog training is the solution.
Behavior Changes
When a dog becomes an alpha male his mindset and behavior will change. First he will stop following commands. He may also begin to show and exhibit undesirable behaviors like snarling, biting, guarding his food, and refusing to be walked by the owner. Because dogs are animals that are pack oriented by nature you need to make them understand where they belong in the hierarchy inside your home; this is the main issue in dealing with alpha male behavior with alpha dog training. You must let your dog know that you are the true alpha in the home by ensuring that you correct him when he does something wrong. You can actually train your dog on your own to make him drop his alpha male behavior and mentality; Some of the following tips may help dealing with alpha male behavior.
Always remember that you are the alpha leader by maintaining control, confidence, calmness and authority with your body language and voice. Anytime you are with your dog, you must physically position yourself by standing tall with shoulders back and head up to put yourself in the alpha position.
Pecking Order
You must stamp the ‘alpha is first’ ideology on your dog by ensuring that he comes second or last in every activity. Many people don’t know that merely allowing their dog to get out of the door before them can trigger alpha male behaviors, so take note of this. Make sure that every human in your house including you, your spouse, your children and others are the first to perform every activity like eating, moving up and down the stairs and getting on the sofa or bed, before your dog.
If your dog wants something let him do something before he gets it. If your dog wants to go out command him to stay or sit, then release him at your own time. Let your dog wait while you prepare his food and release him to eat after he has waited for a while. If you have guests knocking at the door command a sit/stay before you open the door. Because the alpha dog is never disturbed when eating do not allow your dog to watch when you and your family are eating. Command them to their crate, dog bed or spot to avoid their anticipating watchful eyes.
